Frequently Asked Questions

What is a timber frame or post and beam house?
Timber homes are built with strategically placed timbers in a horizontal and vertical framework. The timber frame bears the entire weight of the structure, making load-bearing interior walls unnecessary – that’s why beautiful cathedral ceilings and comfortable open spaces are so common in timber frame homes.

The timber that creates this structure is usually left exposed to display its natural beauty and strength.

How is a log home different from a timber frame home?
A log home is constructed of logs stacked on top of each other to create the exterior walls. Typically, a log home will have a timber structure within the exterior log walls to support the floors, walls, and roof. The interior of a log home appears exactly as the outside: the logs are visible in the same structure as they are on the outside.

What type of wood do you use?
The species of wood we use is usually specified by the architect or designer. Eastern White Pine is a commonly chosen species because it is native to our geographical area, which makes it economical. Douglas Fir is prized for its aesthetics, strength, and large size. Oak, cypress, cedar, and many other species are used.

Regardless of the species of timber used, we always source it from suppliers who practice sustainable forest management.

How long have you been in business?
Over 30 years! We love what we do.

How long does it take to build a timber frame?
The length of time needed to handcraft a custom timber frame is dependent on a number of factors:

  • Size
  • Complexity
  • Site conditions and restrictions

On average, it takes about 10-12 weeks: from crafting in the shop to raising onsite. However, some projects have taken as little as 2 weeks, and some have taken as many as 6 months!

Who delivers the materials to my site?
We do! We take care of delivering the timber frame to your site. Our delivery partners are well versed in correct handling and loading of a timber frame.

Can you develop my floorplan?
We will meet with you to determine what your vision is, and connect you with our network of design professionals. We will collaborate with them to develop your floorplan.

Do I need a special type of foundation to build a timber frame house?

Typically, you do not need a special type of foundation to build a timber frame house. But during the design process, any site specific considerations that require special attention, such as modifications to the foundation, will be flagged.

How much does a timber frame house cost to build?
It depends on a variety of factors:

  • Complexity
  • Materials selected
  • Site specific requirements
  • Location

A custom built timber frame house with cathedral ceilings, open living space, massive window walls, and energy efficiency is comparable in price to a non-timber-frame house with similar components. The timber frame alone starts at $40 per square foot and up. On average, a complete timber frame house can start from $200 per square foot and up.
